T'puram: As the prices of vegetables and dresses soar during Onam, an unlikely place in the capital — prison — will offer the public some relief.The inmates of Central Prison and Correctional Home at Poojappura and Women Prison and Correctional Home at Attakulangara are all set to put on sale more than hundred high-quality products at cheap rates during the fair, Pooradachantha, on Friday. The products include vegetables they have harvested or other items they created as part of the skill training programme.Vegetables cultivated inside the prison include tomato, chilli, bitter gourd, snake gourd, pumpkin, tapioca and lady's finger. Food items, furniture, handicraft products, toys and garments will also be available at Poojappura prison.Shirts, nighties, pants, frocks, churidar tops, pillows, bedsheets, etc., made by inmates working at the tailoring and weaving units will also be available at attractive prices. Furniture goods such as stools, benches, tables, chairs, kitchen shelves, will also be on sale. Smith Unit has made various kinds of knives, spatulas, and other kitchen utensils.Wide varieties of pickles and snacks will be available. Visitors can enjoy delicious food at a stall."The response from the public last year was overwhelming and we expect the same this time. From a 10-day event last time, the event has been reduced to just one day in view of the Wayanad landslide," said Attakulangara prison superintendent Minimol P S.As many as 49 inmates are currently lodged at the women's prison and 1,300 in the central prison.
